Long-Range Facility Planning Workshops
Today, MASA hosted the Aspiring Superintendents Workshop at the Lodge of Four Seasons in Lake Ozark. The workshop provided a focused day of professional learning and networking for 15 future school leaders. Sessions covered key topics including the portrait of an effective superintendent, board relations and superintendent contracts, valuable insights from search-firm consultants on preparing for opportunities, and discussions on future leadership pathways in Missouri education. Special appreciation to Brad Wegman from LJ Hart for attending in person, and to Emily Omohundro from EdCounsel for her support. Thank you to all the presenters and participants for a productive and energizing day. MASA remains committed to developing the next generation of effective public school leaders across Missouri. #MASALeads #AspiringSuperintendents #SchoolLeadership #MissouriEducation #LeadershipDevelopment

What an incredible two days at MASA! 🎉

On March 10 and 11, MASA and MOASBO partnered to host our School Finance Workshop on Developing the FY27 Budget, and the turnout was fantastic. Leaders from across Missouri joined us at the MASA office (and many more streamed in live) for an energetic and collaborative kickoff to budget‑planning season.

A huge thank‑you to Dr. Kyle Kruse, Deputy Commissioner of Financial & Administrative Services at DESE, for joining us and sharing important statewide updates. We’re also grateful to our presenters, Geoff Neill and Jason Hoffman, for leading engaging, practical conversations that helped ground districts in the big‑picture considerations for FY27.

Throughout the workshop, participants explored insights to help frame the months ahead — from what to watch, what to assess and how to prepare for a challenging but important budgeting year.

And of course, we extend our appreciation to our workshop sponsors — American Fidelity, Coryell Roofing, Stifel and Trane — whose support makes professional learning like this possible.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in person and online. We’re grateful for your commitment and excited to keep supporting you as you plan for FY27!

Today, MASA welcomed more than 21 leaders from across the state for the first session of our Advanced Leadership Program powered by FranklinCovey!

Under the guidance of veteran FranklinCovey trainer Gary McGuey, participants spent the day digging into the 4 Essential Roles of Leadership and exploring what it truly means to lead with clarity, trust, and purpose.

This new cohort brings incredible energy and experience, and we cannot wait to see how they apply today’s learning in their districts and communities. Here’s to growing, stretching, and rising to the challenge together! 💼✨

Tonight we celebrated in style at the MASA President’s Reception honoring this years MASA Executive Committee President, Jerry Girdner, from Princeton R-V. Dr. Penny present Mr. Girdner with a MASA Leadership coin in honor of his dedication and exemplary service this year. We teamed up with our friends at the Kentucky Association of School Superintendents and had a full‑on celebration. The Hornets' Nest Pickers, a bluegrass band comprised of superintendent's and retired central office admins out of Kentucky, provided entertainment while everyone enjoyed great food, great music, and even better company. Huge thanks to our event sponsors — we couldn’t do nights like this without you: • Ameresco • Apptegy • Audio Enhancement • Coryell Roofing • EdCounsel • Guin Mundorf • Imagine Learning • L.J. A special thank you to our Region Presidents, Hilary Bales (South Central) and Zach Bruner (Northeast), for organizing today’s meetings and bringing their members together. Your leadership helps make these gatherings meaningful and productive. We also want to thank our presenters from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, Kelli Jones and Kyle Kruse, for sharing valuable updates and insights with both regions.

Thank You to Our Strategic Planning Taskforce!

A huge thank you to the MASA members who joined us in Jefferson City today for the first meeting of our Strategic Planning Taskforce. Your willingness to invest time in this work is deeply appreciated.

Throughout the day, the group dug into both a PESTLE analysis and a SWOT analysis to begin shaping a strong, forward‑looking strategic plan that will guide MASA over the next five years. Your insight, collaboration, and honest conversation are exactly what will make this plan meaningful and impactful for school leaders across Missouri.

We are especially grateful to our facilitator, Lori Van Leer with The Breakthrough Coach, for leading the group with clarity, expertise, and energy.

Thank you all for your leadership and your commitment to MASA’s future. This work matters and so does your voice.

💪 Small but mighty. Today, MASA visited the Bakersfield R-IV School District, a rural district just four miles from the Arkansas border, serving only 462 students. This community has faced extraordinary challenges in the past year: 🌪️ An F-3 tornado that destroyed the district’s sports complex 🌊 A devastating flood ⛈️ Hail damage to school roofs 🔥 A gym fire But Bakersfield R-IV didn’t stop, they rebuilt. The tornado-ravaged sports complex is being replaced with a new, expanded facility on 32 acres, designed to be bigger and better than before, ensuring long-term opportunity for students and the community. Even amid recovery, innovation is thriving. Students benefit from a strong FFA program, Project Lead The Way, welding and building trades, dual credit opportunities, and a newly awarded grant bringing an Anatomage table, tablets, and a Virtual Reality career and technical lab. Student well-being remains a priority with a school-based public health clinic and on-site nurse practitioner, located inside the district’s FEMA-approved tornado safe building. Much of this progress reflects the steady leadership of Superintendent Dr. Amy Padgett, now in her 16th year, whose grant-writing expertise continues to open doors for students. Proof that rural schools don’t just recover, they rise.
